Conference Presenter

MICHAEL LESHER, J.D.

MICHAEL LESHER, M.A., J.D., writer and attorney, has devoted years to fighting for mothers who have lost custody of their children for trying to protect them from alleged sexual abuse. His legal work for mothers and children has appeared in states all over the country, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Maryland, Michigan and New York. He has also handled major federal civil rights cases, including a suit seeking equal protection under the law for a child who contended her alleged rapist was not prosecuted because he was her father.

Mr. Lesher is co-author, with Dr. Amy Neustein, of From Madness to Mutiny: Why Mothers Are Running from the Family Courts – and What Can Be Done about It (University Press of New England/Northeastern, 2005), has contributed chapters to Tempest in the Temple: Jewish Communities & Child Sex Scandals (Brandeis University Press, 2009) and Domestic Violence, Abuse, and Child Custody (Civil Research Institute Press, 2010), and co-authored several academic articles on family court issues, such as “Evaluating PAS: A Critique of Elizabeth Ellis’ ‘A Stepwise Approach to Evaluating Children for PAS’” in the Journal of Child Custody (November 2009) and others for such publications as the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse.

Mr. Lesher’s journalism has appeared in The Village Voice, The Jewish Week, Forward, Canadian Jewish News, and North Jersey Herald & News; he has also published short fiction and poetry. He has received extensive media coverage for his advocacy for child sex abuse victims within the Orthodox Jewish community, including appearances in the New York Times and the Associated Press and on ABC’s Nightline. In 2010, Mr. Lesher, together with Amy Neustein, received a Pro Humanitate Award from the North American Resource Center for Child Welfare for “the intellectual integrity and moral courage required to transcend political and social barriers to champion best practice in the field of child welfare.”
